Derek has been fortunate enough to be able to live by his skills as a painter, in addition to being a fine-artist he has been creating realistic backdrops and murals for the cinema and theatre since graduating from college. Working on productions for Broadway, Cirque du Soleil, and films such as The Chronicle of Spider- wick and the Mummy 3.

His subjects have almost always been figurative, with a special focus on the portraits of women. His work could be defined as expressionistic realism, with varying degrees of either abstraction or realism. What makes Derek's work stand out is its integration; the unity of the figure to its landscape, or of the idea and the painted form bending to meet one another. We are also struck by the technical ability and boldness of his work.
